In Bobcat Class our teacher is Miss Jesson and our teaching assistant is Miss Lebeter.
Miss Radford teaches us on a Thursday afternoon and we work closely with the rest of the KS1 team too.
Autumn 1 - The Big Build
Autumn 2 - Let's Celebrate
Spring 1 - The Potting Shed
Spring 2 - To The Rescue
Summer 1 - Brilliant Bodies
Summer 2 - Animal Allsorts
Our topics for the Summer term are:
Brilliant bodies
In this topic, we will identify, name, draw and label the basic parts of the human body and the functions of these body parts! We will find out about the 5 senses and which part of the body each one of these senses is associated with.
Animal Allsorts
In this topic we will find out about different types of animals that exist in our world and what makes them so special. We will find out how to categorise these animals and to think about where each type of animal might be found.
What can you do to help your child in Year 1?
Come and talk to us if you have any worries or concerns.
Read to them and read with them! Reading is a key skill in Year 1 and helps children become successful, independent learners. Listening to your child read at home at least 4 times a week will ensure continued progress. Please write in your child’s reading diary when they have read to you, as they will be rewarded for this with a raffle ticket (for 3 or more reads at home) and a chance to win a book, each week.
Use the Oxford Owl website to help your child with their reading.
Please continue to help your child learn the keywords in their plastic packet. You could ask them to put them into sentences to help remember them, make another set and play matching pairs, look carefully at the shape of the words to help them recognise them etc.
Count! Count in 1s, in 2s, in 5s and in 10s, forwards and backwards, up the stairs, peas on the plate, pennies in the purse etc. Count to and over 100! Count on and back from different starting points.
Come and help us – we always welcome parents to help us…listen to readers, help with baking, sewing etc.
Meet Ruffles our class dog! Each week he will be sent home with a different child and his adventures recorded in his diary. This is a great opportunity for the children to practise their writing skills so please encourage them to have a go independently :) When Ruffles is returned to school we will encourage the children to share what he has been up to by reading their diary entries to the rest of the class.
Art Sketchbook
We will also be sending home our class art sketchbook with a different child each week to promote the enjoyment of art outside of school. When it is your child's turn they can add their contribution to the sketchbook and share their work with their friends when they return the book to school. The children are free to be as creative as they wish but it must be their own work :)
We have had an amazing time during Sports Week! On Tuesday, we all learnt a special dance with Charlotte that we could perform during our Games Day on Thursday. We also enjoyed practising our running and skipping skills too. On Wednesday, we had a brilliant time with Alex from Circusology! We all thought he was really funny and he taught us lots of circus tricks. We also participated in a KS1 football rounders tournament which was great fun. After all our hard work we enjoyed doing some cosmic yoga to relax. On Thursday, it was our whole school Games Day. We were all given a country as a team name and spent the morning creating some beautiful artwork to represent our country. Then in the afternoon we all went outside to enjoy the sunshine and participate in our whole school Potted Sports event. It was very hot! On Friday, we had a super time playing some games with the parachute and then finished off the week learning some football freestyle tricks with Ash. What a fantastic week!
We all had a fantastic time during our workshop with visiting author Gareth Baker. He told us all about the books he has written and gave us some top tips for how to be a successful writer. With Gareth's help we were able to use some magic words to get our campfire burning and settled down for a cosy story! Gareth asked a few of us to choose some characters and objects and then created a unique story based around our choices. We thoroughly enjoyed our storytime and are all inspired to become writers when we grow up now!
We had an amazing time taking part in a music band workshop run by Rock Steady! We had great fun making our own band and singing along to We Will Rock You!
We have had a great afternoon learning all about how to keep ourselves safe online. First, we talked about what technology we have access to at school and at home and what we use it for. We also discussed what we had seen our grown ups and older brothers and sisters using too. We then watched a cartoon video which taught us about keeping safe online and listened to the story of Smartie the Penguin who taught us a song to help us remember what to do. We learnt about the importance of not giving away our personal information to strangers and telling a grown up if there's anything we are unsure about. We then used the iPads to create our own picture scenes telling everyone how to keep safe online. Fantastic work everyone!
During Art Week, KS1 have been looking at famous artists that painted pictures of the sea, to fit in with their topic “To the rescue”.
In Bobcat Class we have been exploring colour mixing with paints to create sea pictures in the style of Vincent Van Gogh. We have learnt that he was a Dutch artist who was famous for using bright colours and bold brushstrokes in his paintings.
We all had a great day taking part in a variety of activities for our Christmas workshop. First we got creative making our own Christmas crackers and cone characters. Then we learnt all about the Christian story of how baby Jesus was born and used some knitted nativity figures to illustrate the story. Finally we made our own christingles and learnt what each part of the christingle represents for Christian people. What a busy day we had!
We have had a brilliant time during World War 1 Week. We've been really busy learning lots of facts about the war and thinking about what life was like for the soldiers and their families back at home. We have also now got a deeper understanding about why we have Remembrance Day and the special importance of marking this year's centenary of the end of WW1. During the week we've had the chance to explore some WW1 artefacts, take part in a bootcamp session and visit New Cross Church and the memorial.
We had a brilliant afternoon visiting Sutton Library. We listened to the librarian read us a story, looked at some books with our friends and some of us even used the machines to take books home using our library card. Happy reading everyone!
We were all really interested in learning CPR during our 'Re-start a Heart Day'. We learnt all about what to do in an emergency - checking for dangers around us and trying to get a response from someone by tapping on their collarbone and talking to them. We then learnt how to check if someone is breathing. Once we'd established that our patient 'George' wasn't breathing we learnt that we should shout for help, ring 999 and ask for the ambulance. We then practised doing CPR on George, singing the Baby Shark song to help us with the beat, and giving him 2 breaths after each 30 compressions. Great work everyone!
During Science Day we enjoyed participating in lots of fun experiments. We made lava lamps, cornflour slime and fizzy colours as well as making rainbow colours with milk. We also loved making rainbows with skittles and watching the colours travel along paper towels.
We have all had a fantastic day for the start of our Great Fire of London topic! First we dressed as bakers and designed & baked our own bread. Then we went into the hall and acted out the story of how the fire started. We began asleep in our beds and woke to the smell of smoke. We then had great fun trying to put out the flames in our teams with our buckets and fire hooks. Despite our best efforts the fire continued to spread! We found out how the fire spread quickly from the bakery all the way along the row of wooden houses and learnt that the houses had to eventually be blown up with gunpowder in order to put the fire out. Great work everyone!
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
