Music Curriculum Music is taught through the Kapow scheme which is linked to the model music curriculum. In addition to these children are also taught by two peripatetic teachers. In the Foundation Stage, singing, rhymes or other musical activities take place every day, sometimes using Makaton signs and symbols to describe sound. In addition to this, there is a 30-minute direct music teaching session. On a half-termly basis, this lesson is planned by and delivered by our peripatetic music specialist. These lessons involve movement to and exposure to different music genres, exploration of musical instruments, musical stories and songs linked to topics covered in class. For the other half term, music is taught by class teachers using Kapow to deliver a high-quality music curriculum. |
In KS1, there is at least 30 minutes of direct teaching of music each week. Half-termly, this is provided by our peripatetic music specialist through the medium of boom whackers. Throughout these lessons, the inter-related dimensions of music (pitch, duration, tempo, timbre, dynamics, texture and notation) are investigated and put into practice. Children have the opportunity to perform music from various genres using both stave and graphic notation. For the other half of the term, music is taught by class teachers using Kapow. |
In KS2, there is at least 30 minutes direct teaching each week. On a half-termly basis, music is taught by an outside provider using ukuleles. For the other half term, music is taught through the use of Kapow by class teachers. |

Children from Y1-Y6 have the opportunity to learn to play various instruments during their time at Dalestorth. |

The Future |
We are always looking at new and exciting ways to immerse children in music. We are currently on a waiting list to offer a further whole class instrument ensemble lesson in school. We also want to continue to provide opportunities for attending live music events like the Halle Orchestra and Young Voices. |

Music Intent
At Dalestorth Primary and Nursery School, we teach Music by meeting the requirements of the national curriculum. Our aim is to inspire children to embrace a love of music by introducing them to a variety of musical styles and genres. We encourage their creativity in performing music either instrumentally or by singing. Music is taught progressively throughout school, ensuring a build-up of knowledge and skills.
In line with the curriculum for music and guidance from Ofsted, the music scheme moves away from the previous levels and learning objective/outcome concepts to an integrated, practical, exploratory and child-led approach to musical learning.
We will achieve high-quality learning by teaching music through a clear sequence of lessons. Each Unit of Work comprises the strands of musical learning which correspond with the national curriculum for music:
1. Listening and Appraising
2. Musical Activities
a. Warm-up Games
b. Optional Flexible Games
c. Singing
d. Playing instruments
e. Improvisation
f. Composition
3. Performing.
Ongoing assessment is made of each child using the descriptors for the skills taught in each year group, to inform planning and monitor progress.
Young Voices 2024
After a two year wait, Dalestorth choir returned to Young Voices at Sheffield arena. The children sang and behaved beautifully. It was great to see the smiles on the children's faces as the months of practice payed off. It was great to see the special guest MC Grammar too!

Christmas
Our school choir have had a busy few weeks performing Christmas songs within the local community. They sang at King's Mill hospital, The John Eastwood hospice, Sutton-in-Ashfield's light switch on and in The Idlewells shopping centre At every venue the children were praised for their behaviour and singing. Some songs even bringing tears of joy to the members of public watching.
We love to perform Christmas songs during the festive season throughout the school. We especially love singing our traditional whole school song 'This Christmas time'
